One of the best outings I made during my trip to Tokyo in May 2015 was when I went with a friend to Showa Kinen Park in Tachikawa, about 30 kilometers west of central Tokyo. The weather was perfect that day, which made it all even better. It’s an incredibly beautiful park! All the fields with flowers were in full blossom – my favourite field was the poppy field. There are two big lakes in the park, with waterlilies and turtles, and a few smaller lakes. In the middle of the park, there is a very big green area, one area with different sports fields, and a barbecue area. You can rent a bike to move more quickly along the long and numerous tracks, and there’s even a small train that can take you between the different areas of the park! Deep inside the park, there is a bonsai garden, with many different bonsai trees. Many of them are several hundred years old!
If I ever visit Tokyo during the cherry blossom season again, I’d love to go back to Showa Kinen Park, because I can imagine it’s beautiful there then as well.
